Babysitter vs Nanny vs Agency — What’s the Difference, and Which One Does Your Family Actually Need?

One of the most common conversations I have with families is figuring out what they actually need when it comes to childcare. Many parents start by saying they need a babysitter, then realize they need a nanny, then get overwhelmed trying to hire on their own, and eventually end up looking for an agency. These terms are used interchangeably, but they mean different things, and choosing the right type of care can save you a lot of stress, time, and money.
A babysitter is typically for occasional care. Date nights, a few hours during the day, backup help when school is closed, or short-term needs. Sitters usually work for multiple families and don’t have a long-term commitment to one household. This is perfect for families who don’t need consistent help. Still, it can also mean availability isn’t always guaranteed, especially in busy areas like Boulder and Denver, where experienced sitters have full schedules.

This is exactly why our babysitting service at My Boulder Babysitter + Nanny works differently than hiring on your own. Instead of searching online every time you need help, our member families have access to a vetted network of sitters who post their availability on our booking platform and accept jobs through our private job board. Families can request care in advance or on short notice, and we handle the screening, onboarding, and support behind the scenes. Sitters in our network work for multiple families, but they are already approved by us, which means parents aren’t starting from scratch every time they need childcare. Our babysitting service is designed for flexibility, reliability, and peace of mind, especially for families who need care occasionally but want it to feel consistent and professional every time.
A nanny is different because the relationship is ongoing and more structured. A nanny usually works for one family on a consistent schedule, often 20–50 hours per week, and becomes part of the household routine. Nannies help with daily care, naps, meals, school pickup, activities, and sometimes light household tasks related to the kids. Because the role is more consistent, families also take on more responsibility — payroll, taxes, contracts, guaranteed hours, and making sure the position is stable long-term. This is where many families realize hiring on their own can get complicated quickly.

That’s where our nanny agency side of the business comes in, which is completely separate from the babysitting service. When we help with a nanny placement, we are conducting a search for a dedicated caregiver who will work directly for your family long-term. We interview candidates, check references, review experience, and present families with carefully selected options based on their schedule, pay range, parenting style, and household needs. Once hired, the nanny becomes your employee, not ours, and we help guide you through contracts, expectations, and the placement process so everything starts off on the right foot. This is a much more personalized and involved process than booking a sitter, but for families who need consistent care, it makes all the difference.
This is also where the idea of using an agency makes the most sense. An agency doesn’t replace the caregiver — it replaces the stress of finding one. Instead of posting online, sorting through dozens of messages, wondering who is reliable, and hoping the person shows up, you’re working with a service that already has experience matching families with the right type of care. For busy families, this saves hours of time and removes a lot of uncertainty.

After more than a decade running My Boulder Babysitter + Nanny, I’ve seen that most families don’t actually know which type of care they need at first. Some think they need a nanny when occasional babysitting would work, and others try to make babysitting work when what they really need is a consistent long-term caregiver. There isn’t one right choice for every family — but understanding the difference between a babysitter, a nanny, and an agency helps you make the decision with a lot more confidence.
If you’re not sure what type of care makes the most sense for your family, that’s exactly the kind of conversation we have every day, and it’s what we’ve been helping Boulder and Denver families figure out since 2012.
